Deaniqua Phillips Wins Poetry Competition!
Deaniqua Phillips, one of the interviews for the documentary, has won first place in an annual poetry competition.
"Deaniqua Phillips, an 11th grader at Wyandanch Memorial High School has won first place in the 2010 Annual Competition - High School Poetry, for her poem “The Stage of Hilarius Gilges.” Deaniqua has been an active participant in GEAR UP, a college access program. Since last fall, she has been participating in an after-school program “The Captured Nazi Banner Research Project” which sparked her interest in the Holocaust. With the help of GEAR UP instructor Derek Stevens, she has been learning and writing about the Holocaust and decided to submit an entry for the Poetry Contest sponsored by the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County.
GEAR UP Project Director Rhoda Miller of Dowling College has encouraged Deaniqua’s interest in the Holocaust and its lessons for today’s world. Dr. Miller invited Ms. Phillips to attend a class at the college to hear Annie Bleiberg, a local Holocaust survivor, and took Deaniqua to visit the Glen Cove center recently, as well as to a gallery exhibit and talk about Arthur Szyk, an artist who used his talents to call the world’s attention to the Nazi threat and bigotry in all its forms.
The Poetry Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 16 at 2pm at the Holocaust Center in Glen Cove. Ms. Phillips will read her winning entry at the ceremony."
Here is a copy of the e-mail that Deaniqua received from the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County:

Follow Us
The current junior class at Wyandanch High School is creating a documentary on the first graduating class of Wyandanch High School, the class of 1962. With the help of GEAR UP, the students will interview graduates of the 1962 class. In September 2010, the DVDs will go on sale to the community as a scholarship fundraiser for the 2011 graduating class.
Follow us on our journey. As we walk with the original Warriors, we will be uploading parts of interviews, videos and photos.
Walking with Warriors: Wyandanch Class of '62
The purpose of this blog is to connect graduates of the 1962 class with their classmates and current Wyandanch High School students. It will also serve as a starting point for a documentary that will be focused on the first graduating class of Wyandanch High School. We look forward to hearing your stories.
